Helambu fights climate change – and we help communities build resilience.
In Helambu, climate change is hitting the population hard: floods, droughts and failing water sources make it difficult to grow crops – and many young people and adults are choosing to leave the area.
But something is happening.
We build on the work done during the CCAM1 project in Helambu and help local communities put practical solutions into action – solutions that they themselves have identified as important.
Local people know the landscape, culture and pressing challenges best. When we empower them, we give them the power to decide their own future.
Here are some of the concrete activities:
- Increase forest area – to protect soil and water sources
- Ensure sustainable water sources – so there is always water for drinking and growing
- Educate on climate-smart agriculture – so crops survive climate change
- Train in disaster risk reduction – so communities are better prepared
- Create better income opportunities – especially for poor and vulnerable families, for example by growing and selling medicinal plants
- Building capacity in local communities – so they can actively participate in municipal planning
- Strengthen the capacity of local authorities to ensure the work continues in the long term
It’s about creating a sustainable future. It is the local people who will lead and do the work.
