The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen the inclusion of deaf people in Tanzanian society. This will be done by increasing the capacity and quality of sign language interpreting.
Sign language interpreting in Tanzania is currently of poor quality and the number of interpreters is too small to meet a constantly increasing demand for interpreting. Sign language interpreting is one of the most important keys to the integration and active participation of deaf people in society.
The project targets capacity building of sign language interpreters at the interpreters’ organization TASLI and the deaf organization CHAVITA, as well as sign language interpreting students at the University of Dar es Salaam.
Furthermore, advocacy is targeted at public authorities and institutions that have a conventionally and legislatively defined obligation to serve the deaf members of society.
Finally, TASLI is strengthened as an organization. The effort includes courses in sign language interpreting, the ethical demands of interpreting, organizational development, and an action learning process via ongoing CICED supervision of TASLI’s management.
